 JULIA WALLACE

I started off just playing and recording covers trying to imitate the originals. I still make some covers now but I try to make them different with arrangements or additional instruments and altered melodies. Currently, I’m working on originals, with instrumental composing and lyrical aspects. At the moment I'm loving the freedom of writing instrumentals.

If there’s anything to bind

people together it’s art and music.

Outside of music I'm having a go at film photography and I highly recommend. I’m passionate about feminism and LGBT+ acceptance and recognition. If there’s anything to bind people together its art and music. To keep creating and loving is what I am going for.

What is it like having quite a deep voice while singing?

Do you think people treat you differently because of it?

I’ve never really thought about that actually. Sometimes people I'm a male singer, I don’t mind that at all, it’s a bit of a gag. I think it’s just not what people expect, which in music is a pretty handy thing. The Japanese House is an artist who has a very deep female voice and she is a big influence of mine.

I think original music is a reflection of your personality and the music you’ve listened to. I definitely think I am inspired by the music I listen to, the time I invest in exploring the endless genres has driven me to contribute and create. I listen to all sorts of music from small group Jazz, low volume funk, symphonies, up-tempo pop, acoustic pop, ballads, a bit of hip hop, very mixed. At the moment big inspirations and influences of my music are Christian Scott, Matty Healy, Marika Hackman and The Japanese House.

I think the more you listen to different music, you begin to realise how much amazing work is out there and I just want to try being involved in that.

I make all my music on my bedroom desk, on my laptop with a midi keyboard and a microphone and I use Studio One as my current editing program. I am still a major rookie and there is a lot more to learn about producing, which is daunting, but I’m slowly getting there.

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

Boogie Nights Media in Perth are an awesome group of artists, yeah, I’d like to do more with them and other people wanting to collaborate in Perth. I worked with Fiftysix who’s a part of Boogie Nights on his latest single and it was so much fun. Depending on how I go, more opportunities will open up and that’s exciting.

I know I will do some kind of music in the future. Composition or performance would be amazing. But right now I’m just scoping out what music I’m going to be making and enjoying it, so no real plans yet. I will be working on a small body of original works (instrumental as well as vocals) for the next while. The dream is to be signed, whether that’s soon or not soon at all, that’s all good. I just keep learning and improving and hopefully something works out.
